As an attempt to get my students into simplifying the shapes of trees (no leaves, no tiny branches) through drawing, I challenged them to a pancake contest. They received extra credit if they could draw a complex shape and then go home to create the same one out of a pancake. Extra points were given if negative shapes were created within the tree design.
