Q. The ABI Icon is missing from my desktop.

A. There are a few things that can cause the icon to be missing. Here are some steps to try.

First, make sure you are logging into the computer using your staff account. The ABI icon will not show on the desktop using a student account, i.e. LCE11. Also make sure that on the Novell Login screen "Workstation Only " is not checked.

Second, the program that delivers the icon may be in "Offline" mode. This seems to happen randomly. To check this, find the icon on the desktop called Application Explorer. Right click on it, and in the list you will see either "Work Online" or "Work Offline". This is a toggle. If you see "Work Online", then it is currently offline, and choosing that will place it back online. If you see "Work Offline", then it is currently online and this is not the issue. You can also choose "Refresh" if it is already online. This will force it to re-read what icons it should be delivering.

Third, sometimes the icon will end up under another one on the desktop, essentially covered up. Find some empty space on your desktop and right click, choose "Line Up Icons". Do this two or three times. If it is covered up this will usually bring it out into the open.

If none of this works then please give me a call at ex. 283

Q. My printer is spitting out pages that are mostly blank with a bit of gibberish on each page.

A. First, click on Start, then on Settings, the Printers and Faxes. Now double click on the icon for the printer that is printing out junk. (if you have more than one) A new window will open and you should see at least one print job in the list that is printing. In that window click on Printer in the menu bar and choose Cancel All Documents.

Second, go to the printer, turn it off using the power button. Next find the power cord for the printer and unplug it from either the wall or the back of the printer. Give it a few seconds then plug it back in and turn the printer on.

Q. All my computers used to print. The password was changed and now only my main computer will print.

A. Printing is dependant on user accounts having the same password on both the computer that is sending the print job and the computer that has the printer attached. This problem will go away once the users password is the same on both computers. To solve this simply logon to each computer using the username and new password (or current password). Do this for each user account that is used on the computers (such as your personal account and your classroom account).

Q. I want to change my Novell password or My Password expired, how do I change it?

A. There are a number of ways of doing this, here is what I find to be the easiest:

  1. (If you logged in using "Workstation Only"* skip to option # ii.) If you are currently logged in as the account you want to change the password for, then type Ctrl+Alt+Delete and click on the Change Password button. Follow the subsequent instructions. (you will need to use this method if your password is not expired but you want to change it anyway)
  2. If you are not logged in as the account you want to change or you used "Workstation Only"* to get logged in, then logout by going to Start, Shutdown, and choose Log off (current account name will appear here) from the drop down list, then click on OK. Once you are back at the Novell Login window, login using your expired or old password. Make sure "Workstation Only is not checked. If your password is expired, immediately you will get a message in a new window informing you that your password is expired and asking if you want to change it. Answer Yes by clicking on the Yes button. Follow the subsequent instructions.

* Workstation Only by-passes the Novell login, you can not change your Novell password if you by-pass the login.

7.

Q. I'm not receiving e-mail from (xxxxx@xxx.xxx), can you help me?

A. Yes, but I'll need some info. Usually all I need is the error message the sender is getting. Contact the sender and have them copy or forward the error message to postmaster [at] slmail.lcusd.net . I'll take a look at it and respond to them directly.

8.

Q. I'm receiving e-mail delivery failure notices about e-mails I never sent. What is this and how do I make it stop?

A. Unfortunately there is nothing you or I can do about this.

E-mails of this sort are the result of spammers sending e-mails using your e-mail address as the "From" address (this is called spoofing) to bad recipients, or e-mail addresses that don't exist. Since the spam can not be delivered the receiving server tries to inform the sender (supposedly you) that it can not deliver the e-mail. This is what e-mail servers are supposed to do.

There is nothing we can do to stop spammers from using (spoofing) your e-mail address, or anyone's for that matter, as the "From" address. Spoofing does not mean your computer is sending spam, it just means you address is being used. Think of it as someone addressing a letter to send through the US mail. There is nothing stopping anyone from writing your name and address as the from on the envelope and dropping it in a mail box for delivery. The letter will get delivered no matter what is used as the from address. E-mail works essentially the same way.

Q. I can't access my USB drive, it does not show up in My Computer.

A. This happens because Windows is not aware that Novell has mapped dive letters to the server. Windows assigns the next free drive letter it is aware of to the USB drive (usually letter F), but this letter is already in use. In My Computer the Novell mapped drives take precedence and that is what you can see and access. To fix this you must resolve the drive letter conflict. There are two options, and easy way and a not as easy way.

Easy: Open My computer. Locate the first drive letter that is assigned to a server (this is usually letter F). Right click on that drive and choose Disconnect. My Computer should refresh and your USB drive will show up in place of the network drive you just disconnected. This option may affect your ability to use the server, the not as easy option is preferable.

Not as Easy(but better): Open My computer and take note of a drive letter that is not in use, you will need this info later. Right click on the My Computer icon on the desktop and choose Manage. Click on Disk Management in the left pane. Your USB drive will show in both the top and bottom right panes probably as drive F. Right click on your USB drive and choose Change Drive Letter and Paths... Click on the Change button. From the drop down list choose the free drive letter you identified earlier. Click ok to save the change. Click Ok again, you'll get a message warning you that programs may not work, ignore that and save the changes. Your USB drive will now show up in My Computer as the drive letter you just assigned to it.
